Beam to host weekly Beam Safe Academes in Hobart as part of safety education program
  • Beam will host Beam Safe Academies in Hobart on Saturdays in April and May
  • The Beam Safe Academy will incorporate a briefing guide for new riders, an interactive safety quiz, and a free real-world training course

[31 March 2022] Leading micromobility company Beam will host a real-world training course in Hobart every Saturday from 2 April to 31 May, to teach visitors and locals e-scooter safety.

The Beam Safe Academy incorporates a briefing guide for new riders, an interactive safety quiz and a free training course for riders to test out their e-scooter skills in a supportive environment.

The Beam Safe Academy program has been developed in partnership with national safety experts Ascent Training Services, and forms part of Beam’s community engagement efforts to educate riders on local riding rules and safe handling of e-scooters.

Riders will learn safe operating and manoeuvring skills, such as how to turn, brake and signal to other riders and pedestrians. All participants also receive $5 in free ride credit.

Beam riders can also get five minutes of free ride time for completing the in-app Beam Safety Quiz, featuring education of Tasmania’s state legislation (Note: Link here is for media trial only - riders will receive free ride time by completing quiz in-app)

The Beam Safe Academies form part of Beam’s major safety education program, as Beam works alongside the local Councils and police authorities to enforce the riding rules.

Beam’s rider education program also includes:

  • A ‘Ride Kind’ guide within the app featuring instructions on how to park and ride safely in Hobart and Launceston
  • Safety Ambassadors patrol high-traffic areas daily, promoting safe riding and parking
  • Half Beam mode for new riders, featuring reduced acceleration for novice riders’ early trips

Beam General Manager ANZ Tom Cooper said:

“We always have safety at the forefront, and at Beam, safety is more than ensuring a rider has a functioning vehicle that meets safety requirements.
“We want to ensure every Beam rider is always mindful of the riding environment, operates their vehicle under control at all times, and uses a city’s shared spaces well, which is why we host Australia’s only real-world e-scooter training course.
“We think it’s important that riders have the opportunity to learn safety tips and test their skills on the course, because even the safest scooter requires a safer rider.
“With seven sessions in Hobart coming up, we encourage Hobartians to come along and familiarise themselves with how e-scooters work, and how to ride and park them safely.”
